SCHMIDT & ASSOCIATES, LLC serves private investigative and security consulting clients in central Virginia and specializes in litigation support, pre-employment screening, asset tracing, missing persons inquiries, the investigation of insurance matters and surveillance. The firm was founded in 2003 by James C. Schmidt following a twenty-four year career as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A substantial portion of Schmidt's career was spent in the FBI’s New York Division where he was one of the original members of New York’s highly publicized Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). As a Special Operations (Surveillance) Team Leader in New York City, he was on the "front lines" when a shooting war erupted on the streets of New York as a result of an struggle within the Colombo La Cosa Nostra (LCN) organized crime family. In the mid 1990s, Schmidt led an investigation of the upper echelon of the Genovese LCN "Family" in which a team of New York City Police Detectives and FBI Special Agents uncovered and effectively neutralized a death threat against a prominent New York politician. After Schmidt's transfer in 1998 to Richmond, Virginia, he was the FBI's representative to a Spotsylvania County, Virginia Law Enforcement Task Force investigating the highly publicized murder of three young girls; and to "Project Exile," a highly innovative and successful inter-agency initiative targeting gun-related crime and violence.

A trained and experienced FBI Hostage Negotiator, Schmidt is a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI ; the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE); the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO); INTELLENET -- a world-wide network of investigators and security consultants; and the Private Investigator's Association of Virginia (PIAVA).
